Legal Requirements When Scrapping a car in the UK
There are a few legal requirements involved when a vehicle is being scrapped in the UK. Wright Recycling operates as a licensed scrap metal dealer and keeps the process as straightforward as possible.
Licensed to Operate
Businesses that buy scrap and end-of-life vehicles are covered by scrap metal dealer licensing rules. Wright Recycling holds the appropriate local council licence to buy and handle these vehicles legally.
No Cash Payments
Cash payments aren’t permitted when selling a scrap vehicle. Under the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013, payment must be made by a traceable method such as bank transfer or cheque.
Notify the DVLA
The registered keeper must tell the DVLA when the vehicle is taken for scrap or changes ownership. GOV.UK warns that failing to notify the DVLA can result in a fine.
RETAIN YOUR PRIVATE PLATE
If your vehicle has a personalised number plate that you want to keep, make sure it is removed from the vehicle before the sale or scrapping process is completed.
Certificate of Destruction
Where applicable, if your vehicle is permanently scrapped, the Authorised Treatment Facility will issue a Certificate of Destruction. This confirms the vehicle has been officially taken off the road and allows the DVLA record to be updated.
